High temperatures can have many negative effects on calves, requiring extra attention from the ranch. This article provides practical measures to keep calves cool, healthy, and comfortable.

Choose Calf Hutch correctly

Opaque polyethylene calf hutches offer a dry and comfortable environment by blocking 100% of the light, providing superior protection for calves.

Studies show that translucent hutches can be 2-3℃ warmer inside than outside during the day. When the outdoor temperature exceeds 32℃, these hutches can be fatal to calves.

Proper ventilation is also crucial. Hutches should be placed in open areas with adequate spacing to ensure good airflow. Terrui's calf hutches offer additional ventilation options, including ridge vents and adjustable rear windows.

Focus on Heat Stress

In extreme heat, closely monitor calves, as heat stress can be life-threatening.

Typically, observe for signs of dehydration such as lethargy and reduced feed intake. Healthy calves have bright eyes, but if they become excessively dehydrated and lose 4% of their body weight in water, their eyes will appear dull.

Heat stress can weaken a calf's immune system, making them more susceptible to disease.

Other Heat Prevention Measures

  • If using calf pens, consider Terrui ventilation cooling fan. For hutches, ensure rear ventilation windows are open.

  • Choose bedding based on the season. Sand is cooler, and a mix of sand and straw can help reduce insect numbers.

  • Ensure a fresh supply of feed and water with our livestock drinker.

  • Maintain proper drainage inside and outside the hutches. Good drainage is crucial for calf comfort and reducing insect risk.
